It’s estimated that 85 percent of all pets have periodontal disease by the young age of 3. Periodontal disease is a progressive disease of the supporting tissues surrounding teeth and the main cause of early tooth loss. Periodontal disease begins when bacteria combines with food particles to form plaque on the teeth. Within just a few short days, minerals in the saliva bond with the plaque to form tartar, a hard substance that adheres to the teeth. Some different periodontal diseases that pet can get are gingivitis, the inflammation or reddening of the gums, periodontitis, the loss of bone and/or soft tissue around the teeth. Also, studies have shown that animals that have periodontal disease have also had small changes in the heart, liver, and kidneys.
